I remember when I was younger (age 9 to 10) staying up late in the summer with my grandfather. We would talk. He would tell me about the olden days while I fixed him coffee. During those times he cooked a lot of things for me like rice pudding, ice cream floats, and pancakes as big as the plate! Though he passed when I was eleven I will never forget him as he will always be part of me…

When I was young…….Every Saturday morning, My father and I would go to Lexington Market. [Lexington Market is a Baltimore staple which sells all different kinds of foods, accessories, as well as hosts live music.] We would go there to do our weekly shopping for fruits, veggies, and seafood. We would always eat Polish Sausages from a stand called Konstant’s for lunch and take home a yummy corn beef sandwich. My dad knew so many people, so I would always get free fruit or candy:) And he would always buy me spice drops before we left. I’ll never forget those days, they were so wonderful, life was so simple then:)

My childhood memory is a silly one. When I was five my best friend and I were always competive and she was a lil bossy. We were coloring and I had the PURPLE crayon and she decided to snatch it! Can you believe that? So…..I bit her finger :-/ oops….she didn’t take from me again and I stood my ground. To bring this story to the present, I was in a bridal party and my intro to the reception was “her teeth are so strong, she can bite through wood”….how embarrassing lol

We were just talking about this the other day. My fraternal grandmother was the sassiest woman alive and she LOVED to be in the know with all the sayings and stuff we used to insult each other because well.. she didn’t curse. Every summer we’d go to her house in Texas and play and run and eat all her yummy homemade goodies and Big Red soda and sweet tea.

One day we were all sitting around the table and my cousin asked a question and she looked at him and said, “what are you TALKING about you DUMB BUNNY!” o.O I was shocked.. but I could NOT stop laughing! She obviously meant “dumb butt” but added her own twist to everything.

*sigh* I really miss my grandparents sometime. It seems like time flies so fast and we get so caught up in work and every day life that before you know it they’re gone.

My memory would have to be sitting up late at night with my sister talking about everything from boys to what we wanted to be when we grew up. Most of the conversations revolved around boys. Who we were going to marry, how many children we were going to have, and what we were going to name them. The best thing about that was the innocence that we had and how we had to stifle our giggles in order to keep our parents from waking up and making us pay for the fact that we woke them up. Good sisters are few and far between and mine will greatly be missed.

One of my favorite childhood memory is during cool summer nights (in 1984) in Colorado, when my mother would sit me down to do my hair. When she did my hair, I always felt special, and extremely close to my mother. She always took pride in doing our hair. She’d pull out her old, black comb, part my hair, oil my scalp with a small bottle Sulfur 8. I always hated the bitter smell of the oil, but it made my scalp tingle.

After she was finished, she’d part my hair, and begin pulling hair to braid it into scalp-tight cornrows. “I want your hair to rest during the summer, and grow out,” she said. Mom would only let us get our hair relaxed every three or four months, to keep the chemicals from damaging it.

My mother passed away in ’87. After she died, little did I know that one of the things I’d miss most were those summers when she’d do my hair. After she died, I felt helpless and alone. At the time, I didn’t know how to care for myself, my beauty and my hair.. Most girls take the loving advice from their mothers for granted, but hair/beauty are ways that mothers and daughters connect to each other

I’ve since transitioned, and become natural. After learning how to care for my hair (through Youtube Videos and other caring women), I’ve learned the wisdom of my mother’s original advice (to rest the hair). Being natural has been a way for me to bond with other Black women, knowing that I was not, and never was alone.

One of my favorite childhood memories was going to the flea market every Saturday Morning. My God Father was a man of selling antique watches and riddles. I was his little helper. We would wake up at the crack of dawn, load the van and drive 30 minutes to the flea market. He always wanted to get there early so he could get the best spot. I would help put the tables up and set the tables up. The flea market was like a giant candy store to me. I would walk around to each booth and want something from each person. All day I would listen to my God Father say his riddles to all the customers. That’s how he WOWed the people. He was STAN the MAN! That’s how everyone greeted him. It was priceless memories. I always loved his riddles especially since I could never solve them… His favorite one was..
“If right is left and left is right. I turned left to go right which way did I go?”
Till this day I couldn’t answer it. HA! I would never forget those days. R.I.P.
