REQUESTED • Natural Hair • Wedding Hair Suggestions

Last month Abigail emailed me requesting suggestions for her wedding hairstyle for April this year.

Q:

“I am getting married on April 21st (ahhh), and I am having a very difficult time thinking of hairstyles to wear for the big day. I usually wear my hair in twists because having my ‘fro out just gets my hair into a tangled mess and the single strand knots killed alot of my length! Do you have any suggestions for styles I could wear that would be great for the day, in addition for my honeymoon in Hawaii! I REALLY dont want to have to touch it that much while I’m there. I think I can think of a million other things to do that week. P.S. my hair is past my shoulders when stretched. ”

A:

Ironically her hair sounds just like my hair was for my wedding!   Here are a few suggestions for a seamless transition from ceremony to tropical honeymoon:

1.  This twisted flattwist updo

I wore my hair like this for a friend’s wedding in Mexico last October and it held up for travel, ceremony, trip, and weeks afterward.  It’s all twists, flattwists at the base and two-strand twists on the ends. The twists at the end are then pinned up into a secure bun.  You can decorate the style with a clip or flowers for the ceremony, it will accomadate a veil well AND if you want, you can remove the bobby pins and/or twists and just wear a twisted ponytail during your honeymoon.  I will warn you that the bobby pins will set off the airport metal detectors but I lived. LOL

2.  What about this twistout hump into a bun?

This one is a tad more work than the first, but it’s more DIY (read cheaper).  I wore my hair like this to my sister-in-law’s wedding in September. To do this style, you’d have to be ok with retwisting your hair ever night or every other night during your honeymoon.  It’s only 8-12 big twists though, and I just did this while in Miami last month so it’s totally doable in a more humid climate if you want to make it work.  Then you can wear the bun for the wedding, and a twistout and variations thereof while in Hawaii.

3. How about a mohawk?

Now I know you’re thinking “that doesn’t look like a mohawk”, and indeed it does not.  It is, however, my favorite travel hairstyle on the planet, done on twists and cornrows, and it is indeed a mohawk.  I would suggest wearing it in an upswept style or bun for the wedding ceremony then switching it up during your honeymoon.  I have lots of ideas for styles for this one.

Click here to see how I switched this style up MANY times during our 2-week cruise last year.

4.  Next I recommend this pinned down style inspired by my grandmother

This style was a happy accident.  It’s simple but cute; flattwists going up on the side and 2 strand twists pinned down all over my head in rosettes.   My grandmother used to wear her hair kinda like this!  Then, during the honeymoon you could rock the rosettes or take them down and rock the twists. I would definitely do it with smaller twists and much neater but you get the idea.

5. My last suggestion is just good old micro twists

This is actually the solution I chose for my travel wedding, wearing small two-strand twists in a high bun on my head.   The photo above was taken the day before my 1st anniversary at my friend’s wedding.  This style was DIY and I did the twists much smaller than for my own wedding the year prior.  Click here to see the original post with this style.  Then (like I did) you can style you hair however you want to for the wedding and switch it up to your heart’s content during your honeymoon.
Congratulations and I really hope that helps!

Until next time Glam Fam I wish you

I especially like 1, 3, and 5 for wedding hair. I also think this is a pretty wedding style, too (if the hair is long enough): http://www.tiashauntee.com/2011/10/hotw-cornrows-and-cinna-twists-updo.html

I had my hair styled in the mohawk and wore it just like you did here, but mine did not look that beautiful. I guess it was because my hair was shorter and not as full and maybe those factors did not blend well with my face shape. Well, maybe I’ll revisit the style in the near future since my hair is getting longer and longer.

I’ve never done the mohawk on shorter hair, but it is my hands down favorite for a versatile day-to-night travel style.
