This may not resonate with everyone reading this but I am thankful for living in 2013, especially as a black person. This weekend as I sat dressed to the nines in an upscale restaurant on a rooftop in Kansas City, I was strangely aware that it was not 1953 or 1883 when there was NO way I would be enjoying such a magical night with my husband without at minimum steers and jeers, and at worst … well so much worse. I’m not one to lean hard on race as a discussion topic, but so many brown people before me lived in a culture that only wanted them around to build on their backs, it’s heartbreaking and honestly super scary to think that just a short few decades ago I would probably have been serving food in that restaurant and/or cleaning … if they allowed me to touch things at all, and I definitely would not have been privy to complimentary valet traipsing through the front door and treated exactly the same as every other patron. No way. Even thought it’s nowhere near a “post racial” society, I’m thankful for the progress that *has* occurred and prayerful for the progress that must.
