Bringing Depression Out Of The Dark #DayOfLight

#DayofLight

This Wednesday is a special day for all my Glam Fam that have followed my depression series for the past several years. I was “diagnosed” with depression over a decade ago an started sharing my ups and downs with you all as a way of “free therapy”. Well that therapy turned out to be helpful not just to myself, but to many of my readers and viewers that have emailed me, commented, private messaged me and just sent your support over the years.

Earlier today I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed I noticed my girl Natasha’s post about the #DayofLight campaign originated by Brandi from Mama Knows It All. This campaign aims to put a face on depression, share stories and mental health resources, and basically shine a light on this dark disease that affects an estimated 1 in 10 U.S. adults. If you’ve been hanging with me online for any time now you know this is right up my alley so of course I’m joining in!

#DayofLight

What is #DayOfLight?

Several bloggers will be sharing personal stories about depression, as well as information like how to identify depression, therapy options, and national resources. Follow the tag #DayofLight to read them all.

How Can You Participate?

  • Write a blog post sharing your personal experience of depression and/or share resources to help others. Add the #DayOfLight hashtag in your post title.
  • Watch the #DayOfLight Google Hangout on Wednesday, February 5th at 11 AM EST. Tweet and ask questions. (http://bit.ly/1ilifbP)
  • Participate in the #DayOfLight twitter chat on Wednesday, February 5th at 9 PM EST (follow @PushingLovely@NotoriousSpinks, and @BrandiJeter for more information)
  • Turn your social media avatars black and white on Wednesday, February 5th so we can visually represent all of those affected by depression.
  • Share inspiring tweets, posts, and photos  on social media to encourage those who are suffering with depression to let them know that they are not alone. Use the hashtag #DayOfLight.

If you are a blogger and want to join in please do so!  I am a huge advocate of shining light on this mental illness and helping, in my own way, to decrease the stigma associated with it. I know this, ever since I’ve started talking about it honestly online a few years ago, I feel “lighter” and the support has been incredible.  I encourage anyone suffering from depression to seek help and find a great therapist to help you through. You can talk about it, you do not have to hide. You can reach out. ((hugs))

It’s great how blogging is able to be therapeutic. The biggest part of the “therapy” for me was seeing that my feelings weren’t all specific to just me. It did help to know I wasn’t alone. Thank you for sharing your story and lending your support to this cause!

You are welcome. I started sharing a while ago and my first thought after the initial “what will people think?” was “I can’t believe I didn’t do this earlier!”. The feedback and support has been amazing. Awesome effort. I’m posting a vid telling people about it on YouTube in a few.
