Ok who watched the State of the Union Address last night? I can’t say I was rushing to do so, but since hubby tuned in I tuned in with him. As President Obama was announced I felt an unexpected rush of pride in my country. I said to husband”Let’s do this, let’s get our America on!”, but then I quickly returned to my usual immature thoughts as the POTUS entered the room and I couldn’t help but check to see if this Key and Peele sketch was indeed actual fact (it is not btw).
Anyhoo, the speech went about how you’d expect it to go … well at least how I’d expect it to go with my limited political knowledge and involvement (just being honest). To tell the whole truth, I still haven’t decided what party I’m in and fancy myself a “Republicrat” if there was such a thing (strong conservative leanings with liberal tendencies). My first thought as the actual speech began was that Speaker of the House John Boehner (pictured above on the right) was beet red and must’ve played an EPIC round of golf before these proceedings. Contrasting him to the paleness that was Vice President Biden he looked extra crispy and uncomfortable sitting there and reminded me of when my cruiseship tablemates came to dinner looking like lobsters after falling asleep in the sun plied with too many free rum punches. He blended seemlessly into the red strip second from the right on the American flag above his head and, if it wasn’t for that big brown chair and lavender tie, I may not have seen him sitting there at all. Totally unrelated, every time I think of John Boehner I think “Ain’t nothing worse than a soft Boehner, especially when it starts leaning a little to the left.”
Anyhoooooo, so like I was saying, I got from the SOTU what I was expected to get from the SOTU: President Obama touting his many successes of late, limited validation of any of those successes from the majority GOP Congress, POTUS nice nasty telling those in the room not to trip in the remaining years of his presidency, and Boehner sitting expressionless through the whole thing (think cardboard cutout). I wasn’t expecting the congress woman waving her pencil in the air like she just don’t care (showing support for France I’m assuming?), the guy who had been there since the first Congress assembled, or the Congressman worthy of a legit swipe right … they were bonus.
What I didn’t expect to get (and none of us expected because it wasn’t in the pre-circulated transcript of this mug) was President Obama’s off the top joke/response to the silly haters passively heckling him right after he said that he had “no more campaigns to run.” Turns out some members of the mostly Republican Congress thought that was a good point to throw maple tree level shade by applauding then laughing it off “sorry not sorry” style, but as quickly as they hit the POTUS with that jab he came back Luther style on them with the shade of the mighty Sequoia and retorted “I know because I won both of them.” smirk included.
Maaaaaaaan, that response tickled me something awful, and when I checked my Twitter timeline it seemed to have the get the same response by most others. You can see a clip of it here. Don’t get me wrong, 99% of the time I’m a proponent of ignoring dumb people who say dumb things (haters included), but dagnabit sometimes you just need to chop the haters off at the knees and keep it pushing.
So, as I close, the overall lesson I took from the 2015 State of the Union address is, even if you’re the President of the United States and things are turning upward during your presidency, haters gonna hate and try to celebrate your eventual departure. Most time put them on ignore, but every once in a while it’s fun to remind them who you are … then keep it pushing. HA! You’re never gonna please everyone. If we waited on the approval of all to move forward we’d never get anything done. It doesn’t matter how high you get in your area of work, someone is gonna heckle you and applaud your failures and hope for your departure. It doesn’t matter how juicy of a peach you are, someone is not gonna like peaches. If you pre-know this, then when it happens you won’t be shocked, much less affected in anyway. Beyond that, you can always remind them that you have already been successful and move it right along. Tell me that didn’t bless you? Changed my life.
