On September 6, 2017, I had a friend put 125 two strand twists in my hair and that is when I started these locs. It is currently January 10, 2018, which means I have been loced for four months
and four days. My last wash was last week, my last retwist was three weeks and four days ago. In the two-month video, I jumped on a week after a retwist so I wanted to jump on when I was in need of a retwist so that you guys could see my hair in this super fuzzy state.
WASHING MY LOCS
Not much has changed from the month 2 video except I’m no longer using the spray diluted conditioner for no reason except I forgot I was doing that. I might do it again at least in the winter months because my hair has been dry and we’ll talk about that later. Pretty much everything is the same. I still put apple cider vinegar on my scalp, I still put oil all over my hair I sit on the dryer
for a little while then I jump in the shower I wash my hair with a clarifying shampoo or a regular or a regular smegular shampoo. I do that a couple times. I hit it up with a moisturizing shampoo, and then I do that last apple cider spray, put it up wash my body, rinse the apple cider vinegar out and that’s it. If you want a little bit more detail absolutely check out my two-month video.
I was intending to wash my hair every week at the beginning and that was cool and all except the way these like single-digit temperatures are set up that’s not the business. Plus it was the holidays and I got super lazy and just didn’t do it so I went a good three-plus weeks without washing my hair. Now I’m kind of on an every other week schedule and that seems to be working really well for me.
POPPING & RETWISTING MY LOCS
When I wash my hair I don’t always retwist, but when I don’t retwist I separate my locs at the root because if I don’t it becomes a tangled mess. This is called “popping” your locs. After I wash I put some grapeseed oil on my hair, then I take each loc and I separate it at the root with my fingers. I don’t twist I just move the stray hairs away, define the part with my fingers, go through each one-by-one making sure that there isn’t any snagging and tangling. I always do this while my hair is wet. I really enjoy the results of this and did not do it once and noticed the difference.
I have done three retwists so far, one with gel, one with foam wrap, and one with … WATER! That’s it. The grapeseed oil that was in my hair and water. I use a spray bottle
that has water and grapeseed oil in it, wet my hair and did not add any additional product. The gel gave a soft but firm hold, the foam wrap a medium hold, and the water a very light hold and go fuzzy quicker. I really enjoyed retwisting with water only and think, unless I have a reason to use a product, I may just do water-only retwists moving forward. We’ll see.
INTERLOCING MY LOCS
In the last update video, I mentioned that I purchased an interlocing tool because I had to interloc one loc on in the back at the nape and one on the side entirely. I also mentioned trying to interloc a third loc but making a big not and having to cut part of my a hair off. I eventually interloced the #3 loc using the locing tool because it had completely unraveled again. Many people commented on my YouTube video recommending that I braid the base of the twist then retwist it to keep it from unraveling but I just never got around to trying that method.
On the other side of the nape of my neck is my most formidable loc bud! There are definitely some other spots in my hair where I feel budding but I do have a relatively looser texture on the top of my head so it’s noncompliant and did not get the memo that I’m of African descent and trying to loc up. Please hold …
MAINTAINING MY LOCS
Honestly, I don’t do much. The products have not changed from the two-month video. There’s a lot of water and grapeseed oil spraying. I also have a spray bottle with a little bit of the Inspired Beauty Sweet Tea, half water and half Oyin Handmade Greg Juice. I diluted that Greg Juice because my hair wasn’t behaving well with it. Strangely my hair really likes the Frank Juice and
the Juices and Berries so who knows.
MOISTURIZING MY LOCS
One of the challenges that I have had seeing that it is January and ridiculously cold is my hair was dry. I can tell the difference between not having the deep conditioning step in my regimen like when my natural hair was loose. To alleviate some of the dryness I brought back the hot oil treatment before I washed my locs last week and have been oiling my scalp with a grapeseed oil. I also spray my hair every day now and add a little bit more moisture on the ends and I have noticed a positive difference.
FRIZZY LOCS & THE “UGLY STAGE”
My hair is so frizzy AND I LOVE IT! I’m assuming that this four-month period right now is one of these “ugly stages” that people talk about when it comes to locing. I’ve never been a big proponent of the “ugly stage” with natural hair or locing because I to have an “ugly stage” you have to think you look ugly and I don’t. There are stages that aren’t perfect. They are organic and not as contained and constrained, but I find beauty in this stage as well. When my hair is retwisted there are positives and negatives to how that looks, and when my hair is like this there are positive and negatives to how this looks. This is almost four weeks not retwisted, not palm rolled, washed again so that it’s poufy … just living my life and I love it.
There is definitely growth throughout my hair evident by the base of the original interloced loc or twist and the significant new growth, I’d guess an inch or more. My hair grows so this is not a shocker. Whenever I retwist I have serious hangtime and I never experienced the full shrinkage sans hangtime that I thought I would. Even fully shrunken and untwisted my hair still dangles and sways which is totally unexpected.
