What’s Wrong With His Legs? – A Special Needs Mom Public Service Announcment
It’s hard out here in these parent-of-a-child-with-special-needs streets.
People ain’t got no clear sense or just don’t know no betta. That’s where my PSA comes in. I figure it can’t hurtย to educate folk as to what the experience is like on the back end of some of their ignorant (meant in the truest form of the word comments). This time it’s me having to respond to the questions “What’s wrong with his legs?” from a stranger … in a motorized chair … with a cane (ma’am?) … at the WalMart. Seriously.

I just watched your public service announcement and I feel the same way. My son is currently wearing AFO and I am proud of you for not slapping that woman in the face. I might of replied what is wrong with your mouth? If she said what do you mean ? I would say well clearly there is something wrong because it just spits out ignorant comments.

I know these things will happens but it still shocks me when it does. Since my son’s only 2 I expect some more of these sorts of rude comments and I also expect to keep educating my audience through these platforms so they aren’t the ones saying the rude comments lol. Thanks for commenting.

I love your PSA. My daughter is 2 and wears an afo on one side. Your video is a nice comical relief from the daily stuff. Your facial expression around the 1:31 mark is the best when you were going to ask “what’s wrong with YOUR legs”

And the revolution continues…I went through so much of this with my son who had a bald head and a shunt as a result of chemo/radiation. Then he had developmental and physical challenges to follow. I wasn’t as tactful as you in the beginning. You cannot tell me anything about my children… Seriously. But I eventually found the high road and tried to educate through example. Now that he’s passed on I will use my time here left on earth to help move the revolution forward. People with special abilities are truly one of the most under recognized populations in the world.
