Don’t Knock Small Things You Haven’t Tried
If you keep saying you want peace, joy, consistency, freedom, or a life that feels more like yours, but you keep waiting for a huge life overhaul to make it happen, this post is for you.
Don’t knock small things you haven’t tried.
Most of us do not lack information. We have read the books. We have listened to the podcasts. We have watched the videos. We have taken the classes, saved the posts, joined the programs, and nodded along like, “Mhm. Girl, that’s exactly what it is.”
But knowing something and doing something are not the same thing. 🤷🏽♀️
Lemme say that again:
Knowing something and doing something are not the same thing, sis. 👩🏾🏫
A lot of us do not need more information. We need implementation.
The Big Change Usually Starts Small
We loooooove a dramatic transformation, right?
A before-and-after slideshow on Instagram. A 30-day glow-up TikTok. Some huge reinvention package in a 37-second short for YouTube. The patented “new year, new me” plan, complete with a story that makes it look like somebody woke up one day and completely rebuilt their life by Tuesday.
We like those videos, even cheer those people on, then secretly shame ourselves for not being able to produce the same thing in our own lives.
But girl, the gag is lasting transformation rarely happens in one massive swoop by taking one huge action. And those are just videos on the internet hun. Real change comes from small, repeated choices, on the daily.
Lemme say that again:
Real change comes from small, repeated choices, on the daily. 👩🏾🏫
And the real gag is, it's usually the small choices that feel like they're almost too simple to actually matter that eventually get you where you want to go. Like taking a breath before you respond, walking for five minutes, writing that one page, drinking water before you have coffee, sleeping on it before you respond, or pausing before you explain yourself to somebody committed to misunderstanding you.
Those small things do not always look impressive and, trust me, nobody is probably gonna clap if you do them. But those are the choices that build the scaffolding for the life you say you want.👩🏾🏫
Your Nervous System Likes What Feels Familiar
One reason big change feels hard is because your body tends to default to what it knows, even when what it knows is not helping you. If you try to change everything at once, your nervous system may experience that as danger because new can feel unsafe, even when new is good.
So when you decide, “Tomorrow, I am changing my entire life,” your body may respond like, “Absolutely not. Abort! Abort! Abort!”
That is why small changes matter.
Small changes give your body a chance to adjust incrementally, kinda like exposure therapy for your habits. Small changes help your nervous system learn, “Oh, we can do something new and survive.” That is how you begin to build consistency without forcing yourself and constantly getting stuck in a start-stop loop.
You Fall to the Level of Your Systems
James Clear writes in Atomic Habits, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
Most of us have been taught to focus on the big goal, but what is the small system underneath that desire? 🤔
If you want to rest more, what is the five-minute practice?
If you want better boundaries, what is the sentence you can rehearse?
If you want to move your body, what is the one song you can dance to in the kitchen?
If you want to stop overcommitting, what is the pause you take before answering?
You do not need a giant system to begin. You need one small repeatable choice that helps your body believe you are safe while becoming someone new.
You Have Mastered What You Have Repeated
In The Fifth Agreement, Don Miguel Ruiz writes, “Life is the result of action. It is a result of practice. Practice makes the master.”
That means your current patterns did not appear out of nowhere. You mastered what you repeated.
Lemme say that again:
Your current patterns did not appear out of nowhere. You mastered what you repeated. 👩🏾🏫
If you self-abandon, you may have practiced that for years.
If you overgive, you may have practiced that for years.
If you ignore your body, you may have practiced that for years.
If you say yes when you mean no, you may have practiced that for years.
If you burn yourself out and call it being dependable, you may have practiced that for years.
The good news, then, is that it also means you can practice something new.
You can practice rest.
You can practice softness.
You can practice boundaries.
You can practice asking for help.
You can practice telling the truth.
You can practice moving your body.
You can practice creating from peace instead of pressure.
Not all at once in some big overarching renovation, but one small choice at a time. 🙂
So the question becomes ...
✨ Where are you waiting for a big change when a small one would actually help?
✨ What small thing have you dismissed because it seemed too simple?
✨ What promise can you make to yourself this week that is small enough to keep?
Leave a comment and tell me the small thing you are choosing. 👇🏾
