VIDEO I MENTIONED – Why Smart People Underperform

“Define Clear And Specific Goals. If you’re trying to figure out how to stay focused on your goals, break them down into 4 categories: no more than 3 short term goals to accomplish today, 3 medium term goals to accomplish in the next 2-4 weeks, 3 long term goals to meet in the next 6-12 months, and 3 lifetime goals to meet before you die.”

In this video, I went live in Find Your Light — my free life coaching community on Facebook — to share the new way I plan on goal setting.

I started out at the end of last year talking about setting intentional goals. I found the video: Why Smart People Underperform several weeks ago and I was inspired to change the way I set my goals. The first thing he goes into is that we (smart people lol) lack focus. Ironically (or insightfully) I joke about this constantly in my video concerning myself, and we don’t have the right techniques on how we set up our goals. He goes on to suggest we should have three goals. Three things that you want to accomplish every single day. Now that alone blows me out of the water because I have been doing a long list and a shortlist version of goal setting for over a year now and have felt like have I’ve some success.

He believes at the end of the day my longlist/shortlist technique will leave you feeling like you have done a lot of things, but you haven’t moved in any direction.  I can attest to that somewhat. If I make sure that my long list is prioritized clearly I experience better results but if I have an un-prioritized long list, then he’s right. I get a lot of things done by the end of the day, but I don’t know if those things are actually moving me in a direction I desire.

So that needs to stop.

According to the video you should have:

  • 3 goals to accomplish for each day
  • 3 goals to accomplish each week
  • 3 goals to accomplish each month
  • 3 goals to accomplish each year
  • 3 goals to accomplish in your lifetime

You then end up having your lifetime goals, and all of your micro-goals, feed into your macro lifetime goal. So your 3 daily goals help you get to your weekly goals. Your 3 weekly goals help you get to your monthly goals. Your 3 monthly goals help you get to your yearly goals. And your 3 yearly goals help you get to your lifetime goals.

That makes sense.

Not only does it make sense, I’m incorporating it moving forward. It has already made me reevaluate where I’m spending my time, and what I’m spending my time on. I realized that there were some things that were causing me to stress that I don’t really need to be doing so I’ve eliminated them.

My 3 lifetime goals will be:

  • Create art that inspires black women
  • Build thriving relationships
  • Have a healthy mind and body

I will flesh out the other goals based on these 3 umbrellas and go from there.
